English Instructor at Saddleback College
Welcome!
Mission statement
Hello! My name is Carolina Hernandez-Bachman, and I am excited to teach this section of English C1000! I grew up in a Mexican-American household, and I’m a first-generation college student which means my siblings and I were the first to attend college in our family. In my free time, I lift weights, walk my dog, and enjoy reading scary stories. The scariest stories I’ve heard come from old family tales, and because of this, I value communal knowledge passed down generations. The best recipes also come from word-of-mouth and measuring with your heart and ancestors in mind.
I hope to get to know you, where you come from, and what you value. As your instructor, I acknowledge that we all have unique experiences, and I value what you have to say. This classroom is meant to be a safe space where we can express our voices and recognize each other as individuals and as writers. Please let me know if at any time these spaces do not reflect this. I will do my best to correct this.
As an educator, I am aware of the structural opportunity gaps within the higher education system—I went through them, too, as a Latina, disabled student, and first-generation college student. In this classroom, we will read and discuss texts that reveal these institutions' powers over individuals and how our own positionalities affect where we are and where we go. I will empower us with the tools to critically use the voices we have so that we can navigate these systems; in addition to this, we will celebrate the unique qualities of our voices as well.
